On May 20th, World Bee Day is celebrated to raise public awareness about the importance of these insects for the survival of the planet.
Bees are seriously threatened by pesticides, climate change, pollution, and the loss of their natural habitats. We should protect them as one of the world’s most precious treasures, but we don’t.
They are essential for maintaining ecological balance and biodiversity through pollination, which enables food production. They also serve as indicators of environmental health: their presence or absence tells us what is happening to planet Earth.
It is precisely for these reasons that the UN has designated May 20th as World Bee Day. The goal is to strengthen measures to protect them and other pollinators, which would significantly help address global food supply issues and eliminate hunger in developing countries.
